Description

Flourish is envisioned as a public art installation celebrating Washington School for the Deaf’s rich history and commitment to student empowerment. The sculpture’s rooted base symbolizes the school’s enduring presence and connection to its community, while its upward-reaching branches represent the students’ growth and potential to make an impact on the world. The form and structure are designed to reflect both individuality and the interconnectedness of WSD’s diverse student body.

The proposal blends themes of stability and change, representing the school as a place of refuge while also preparing students for future success. The dynamic use of color and form evokes Kissfist, the sign language expression for “I love it,” capturing the joyful, inclusive atmosphere of WSD. Integrated into the school’s architecture, the piece serves as a welcoming symbol for students, faculty, and visitors alike.

Although this proposal was not selected, Flourish remains a strong representation of the vibrancy and potential of the Washington School for the Deaf’s community, celebrating the empowerment and growth of its students.
