Singing River
Overview
Singing River is a large-scale public artwork created in collaboration with Reinaldo Correa Studio for Bradenton’s Riverwalk East. Inspired by the history and folklore of the Manatee River, the sculpture draws from stories of the river’s mysterious sounds and its connection to the surrounding community. Its flowing form, layered color, wind-activated sound, and integrated lighting create an immersive experience that changes from day to night.

Description
Its sweeping form follows the movement of water, carrying hundreds of individually suspended aluminum elements above the Riverwalk. Wind moves through the sculpture, activating both its surface and a series of custom acoustic flutes that produce harmonic chords in response to changing conditions. Throughout the day, sunlight, shadow, color, and movement continually reshape the work. At night, integrated programmable lighting transforms the structure into a luminous presence along the river.
The project was developed collaboratively by Project One Studio and Reinaldo Correa Studio, working closely with the City of Bradenton, the Bradenton CRA, historians, community partners, engineers, and acoustic specialists. Both studios were directly involved in the design, fabrication, and installation of the work, allowing the concept and technical development to evolve together from the earliest design studies through final construction.
The result is a highly site-specific work that visitors can move through rather than simply view from a distance. Singing River becomes part of the Riverwalk itself, creating a destination for gathering, discovery, and interaction while connecting the contemporary riverfront to the stories and environmental forces that have shaped it.
