SkyLume

Overview

Standing 60 feet tall in Huntsville’s John Hunt Park, SkyLume is a monumental kinetic and illuminated sculpture inspired by the energy, ambition, and spirit of exploration that have shaped the city for generations. The work brings together sculpture, architecture, engineering, movement, and light to create a landmark that changes throughout the day and responds directly to its environment.

Completed in 2026, SkyLume represents one of Project One Studio’s most ambitious works to date, bringing years of experimentation with kinetic systems, complex fabrication, and integrated lighting together at a new scale.

Description
SkyLume explores ideas of attraction, movement, and possibility. A tall central ribbon descends through the sculpture, suggesting gravitational pull and the forces that draw people and ideas together. Around it, a secondary ribbon spirals upward, expressing movement, growth, and continual discovery.

References to gravity, orbital mechanics, propulsion, and flight are woven throughout the design, connecting the sculpture to both the history of John Hunt Park, once home to Huntsville’s airport, and the city’s lasting influence on aerospace innovation. These references remain intentionally abstract, allowing the work to reflect Huntsville without relying on literal imagery or recognizable symbols.

Hundreds of kinetic elements respond independently to wind and sunlight, constantly changing the surface of the sculpture as conditions shift throughout the day. At night, programmable internal lighting transforms the work into a luminous landmark, with light filtering through and across the layered structure. Small perforations within the inner skin create additional points of light, revealing details that become more apparent as visitors move around and beneath the sculpture.

Located within a park that hosts athletics, festivals, concerts, and community gatherings, SkyLume was designed to work at multiple scales. From a distance, its height, movement, and light provide a recognizable point of orientation across the park. Up close, the kinetic components, changing reflections, perforations, and layered structure create a more detailed and continually changing experience.

The completed work reflects the collaboration of artists, designers, engineers, fabricators, contractors, and the Huntsville community, transforming an ambitious concept into a permanent landmark built around movement, light, and the idea of looking forward.
