Confluent Threads is inspired by Alexandria’s identity as one of the most diverse communities in the region. Each colorful line in the artwork represents an individual community member—distinct and vibrant—coming together to create something greater. As these threads move from east to west, they blend, tangle, and burst into a lively display of color, much like the cultural exchanges that make Alexandria unique.

Originally planned for the library’s lawn, the project shifted focus to the building’s brutalist façade after discussions with librarians and patrons revealed a desire to soften its harsh, impersonal appearance. The concrete walls now serve as a canvas, transforming the library into a visual billboard for both the institution and the city.

The form of the installation is derived from the weaving or knitting of threads, which symbolize interconnectedness, familial heritage, and the blending of generations. The chaotic yet harmonious arrangement of lines reflects the dynamic and evolving nature of the community. The spectrum of colors enhances the sense of movement and transformation, making Confluent Threads a powerful representation of Alexandria’s spirit of unity through diversity.
